Vithoba Temple, Pandharpur

The Vithoba Temple in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, is one of the most significant temples dedicated to Lord Vithoba (Vitthal), a form of Lord Krishna (Vishnu). Also known as Panduranga, Lord Vithoba is worshipped as the deity of the Bhakti movement, especially by the Warkari sect. The temple is believed to be more than 800 years old and holds deep spiritual and historical importance.
According to legends, Lord Vithoba appeared before his devotee Pundalik, who was busy serving his parents. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord stayed in Pandharpur, standing on a brick (Veet in Marathi), which is why he is called “Vitthal”.
Sant Dnyaneshwar, Sant Tukaram, Sant Namdev, and other saints of the Bhakti movement worshipped Vitthal, making Pandharpur the spiritual capital of Maharashtra.

The main temple complex is built in traditional Hemadpanthi style, featuring stone pillars and intricate carvings.
The idol of Lord Vithoba is around 3.5 feet tall, with both hands on his waist, standing on a brick (Veet).
The temple also has a shrine dedicated to Rukmini Devi, consort of Lord Vithoba.
There are 6 main entrances, the most famous being the Namdev Darwaja.
