📜 History of Jagannath Temple, Ranchi

The temple was built by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, the king of Barkagarh, and a prominent ruler of the Nagvanshi Dynasty.
It reflects the religious devotion of the Nagvanshi kings, who were instrumental in spreading Jagannath worship in Chotanagpur.
The temple is over 330 years old, making it one of Ranchi’s most historic and spiritual landmarks.
In 1990, the temple structure collapsed, but was later restored and reconstructed, staying true to its original architectural style.

Inspired by the famous Jagannath Temple of Puri, but on a smaller scale.
Built in the Kalinga architectural style, it features:
- A shikhara (spire) with detailed carvings
- A sanctum (Garbhagriha) housing Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra
- Intricate stonework, pillars, and steps reflecting 17th-century design
The temple is located atop a hill, offering panoramic views of Ranchi city and the surrounding landscapes.

Daily Pujas and Aartis are conducted as per Vaishnava traditions.
Special offerings of Mahaprasad, including sweets and dry fruits, are made.
Devotees come to seek blessings for:
- Marriage
- Health and recovery
- Career success and new beginnings

Held every year in June-July, coinciding with the Puri Rath Yatra.
The deities are brought out of the sanctum and placed on a decorated wooden chariot.
Pulled by devotees, the chariot is taken around the temple compound in a grand procession.
It draws thousands of devotees, turning the entire area into a vibrant, festive celebration with music, bhajans, and prasad distribution.
Temporary shops and cultural performances are also part of the event.
