Sri Nageshwarnath Temple is one of the prominent and ancient temples in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the only surviving temple from ancient Ayodhya and holds immense religious significance, particularly among devotees of Shiva.
History, Mythology & Significance:
According to ancient texts, after Lord Rama left for his heavenly abode, his son Kusha ruled Ayodhya.
One day, while bathing in the Sarayu River, Kusha lost his armlet (kada) in the water.
A Naga Kanya (serpent maiden), who lived in the river, found it and returned it to him.
The Naga Kanya was a devotee of Lord Shiva, and as a gesture of gratitude and respect, Kusha built the Nageshwarnath Temple, dedicated to Shiva.
It is believed that the presence of the Naga Kanya and her devotion to Shiva kept the temple sacred and undamaged over centuries, even as other structures in Ayodhya perished.
Architecture:
- The temple exhibits traditional Nagara-style architecture, featuring a tall spire (shikhara), intricate carvings, and a large Shiva Lingam inside the sanctum (garbhagriha).
