Tungnath Temple

Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar temples, built by the Pandavas to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for their sins during the Kurukshetra war.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva disguised himself as a bull to avoid the Pandavas. When they recognized him, he dove underground, leaving behind parts of his body at different locations.
The arms of Shiva are worshipped at Tungnath, making it a sacred pilgrimage site.
Devotees visit the temple seeking spiritual purification, peace, and divine blessings.

Style: The temple showcases Katyuri-style architecture, built with massive stones and intricate carvings.
Main Deity: The idol of Lord Shiva is enshrined in the sanctum, represented by a Shivlinga made of black rock.
Temple Complex:
- The complex includes smaller shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and other deities.
- The stone carvings depict mythological figures and motifs.
Temple Tower: The shikhara (spire) has carvings of deities and mythological symbols.

According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s blessings to atone for their sins.
To avoid them, Shiva transformed into a bull and disappeared underground.
Different parts of his body appeared at five places, forming the Panch Kedar temples:
- Kedarnath – Hump of the bull.
- Tungnath – Arms of Shiva.
- Rudranath – Face of Shiva.
- Madhyamaheshwar – Navel and stomach.
- Kalpeshwar – Hair and head.
The Tungnath temple is believed to be over 1,000 years old and was discovered by the Adi Shankaracharya.
