According to legend, Lord Shani appeared in Shingnapur in the form of a black stone. The story goes as follows:
The Discovery of Lord Shani’s Idol
A shepherd found a mysterious black stone in the Panasnala River. When he touched it with a pointed rod, the stone started bleeding. That night, Lord Shani appeared in his dream and revealed that the stone was his idol. The Lord instructed that he should be worshipped in an open shrine, and there was no need for a temple structure.
Lord Shani’s Protection
The villagers believed that Lord Shani himself protected the village, and hence, no house in Shani Shingnapur has doors or locks. It is believed that anyone who tries to steal will face instant divine punishment.
Temple Features:
1. Open-Air Shrine
Unlike other temples, Shani Shingnapur Mandir has no roof or walls, and the idol of Lord Shani is placed in an open-air platform. Devotees offer prayers, mustard oil, black sesame, and flowers to seek his blessings.
2. No Priests or Traditional Worship
The temple does not have a traditional priest system. Devotees can offer prayers directly to the deity.
3. Unique Rituals
- Only men are allowed to touch the idol, and they must take a ritual bath before offering prayers.
- Women were historically not allowed to enter the inner sanctum, but in 2016, the ban was lifted after legal and social reforms.
- Devotees pour mustard oil on the idol as an offering, as it is believed to reduce the malefic effects of Lord Shani.
